Sacchi on Milan derby: ‘Inter did what all Italian teams do…’

Arrigo Sacchi was not impressed with Inter’s tactical decisions in their 2-1 derby loss to Milan last night.

The Nerazzurri took the lead after half an hour thanks to Ivan Perisic and they controlled the game well, until Olivier Giroud scored two goals in three minutes to pick up all three points for the Rossoneri, putting them only one point behind Simone Inzaghi’s side in the Serie A table.

Speaking in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Sacchi gave his thoughts on Inter’s game-plan during the derby.

“Inter did what all Italian teams do: once in the lead, instead of looking for the knockout, they worry about managing the game, they slow down the pace. That’s not good. You have to attack and have courage for 90 minutes or more.”

He touched on the importance of Brahim Diaz to the Rossoneri’s win yesterday.

“With Diaz, Milan were set up and Brozovic was forced to run after an opponent instead of being chased by Kessie. Set up in the middle of the pitch, in the final third, Diaz was a nuisance because he was receiving the ball in a dangerous position.”

Finally, Sacchi highlighted which players he was most impressed by during the match.

“I don’t understand why Inter dropped the pressure like that. Giroud decided the game at least as much as Maignan. For me the goalkeeper was the best.”

Inter’s derby loss could have significant ramifications on the title race this season; currently Milan are only one point behind them in the league table, and a Napoli win over Venezia today would also see the Partenopei rise to just a point behind the Nerazzurri.
