Arrigo Sacchi harshly criticises Milan defenders but admits that the main differences between the Rossoneri and Inter emerged during last night’s derby.

The Nerazzurri won the first Derby della Madonnina this season, qualifying for the Coppa Italia Final, where they will meet Fiorentina or Juventus.

A brace of Lautaro Martinez and Robin Gosens’ first goal at Inter, helped Simone Inzaghi’s boys collect a 3-0 victory. According to Sacchi, the Benamata deserved to win, although a three-goal margin is probably too harsh on the Rossoneri.

“Inter broke the deadlock early and then relied on counter-attacks,” the ex-Milan and Italy coach told La Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper.

“However, who was in charge of man-marking Lautaro? Milan were too naive and you could see that also when Inter scored the second goal.”

Sacchi was not impressed by the performance of the Rossoneri, who looked disjointed. “Milan obtain the best results when they are united and every department is well connected,” the former coach continued.

“Distances are fundamental and problems emerge if players move alone up and down the pitch.”

What was the main difference between the Rossoneri and the Nerazzurri last night?

“In terms of quality and experience, Milan and Inter can’t even be compared,” said Sacchi.

“Inter are a top team and are closer than Milan to reaching a great level in Europe, also thanks to their investments. However, they still need to improve as a collective. Strikers must help defenders and defenders must support the attack, that’s the only way to achieve relevant targets.”

Inter are in the race for a domestic treble after winning the Supercoppa in January. They are two points behind Milan in Serie A, but can jump to the top of the table if they win their game in hand against Bologna next week.

  1. Hopefully, this makes it clear to all those delusional Milan fans that think they are superior based on the current standings. It really doesn’t matter that much. Or do you guys really think that Lille OSC was a much better team compared to PSG since they won Ligue 1 last year. Milan is infested with mediocre players who constantly make it into the starting XI. Milan fans keep talking about the budget, but when you take a look at the numbers, Milan has spent the most in the transfer market over the last 5 years. They have spent more money than Juventus! Yet, their fans keep talking about the ‘limited budget’ and how Inter and Juventus should be ashamed that Milan is ahead of them. It’s hysterical.

Yes, that’s how leagues work. If Inter can beat Bologna they will then be the best team in the league having gained the most points.

  3. @DB Milan okay, you got me on that one, but before making the statement that Milan is superior, could you at least wait for the season to be over? Inter was a laughing stock a few years back for celebration winter championships. Milan fans should’ve learned from that. I understand it’s been a while since you guys have won Serie A and that there is a slight chance you will pull it off this year, but claiming superiority knowing that Inter has a game in hand is absolutely ridiculous. Especially when you look at the games remaining.
