Alejandro Sabella confessed Argentina were “lucky” to beat Switzerland in extra time for a World Cup quarter-final spot.

A dire 0-0 draw was heading for penalties until Angel Di Maria’s angled drive at the 118th minute. Even then, they were saved by the woodwork on Blerim Dzemaili’s header.

“Luckily we were able to win the game in extra time,” he told reporters at the final whistle.

“The first half Switzerland were on top, then it was us. It was a strange game.

“Now we have to rest up and prepare for the next game.”

Argentina will face either Belgium or the USA in the World Cup quarter-final, but Marcos Rojo will be suspended.

Sabella was asked whether this reminded him of beating England on penalties in the 1998 World Cup, when he was assistant manager to Daniel Passarella.

“As a Coach there was a greater weight on my shoulders, but luckily we were able to win in 120 minutes.”
