He has inspired Milan after his comeback for the Rossoneri and was again important when he helped them to a 2-0 lead at half-time in the Derby della Madonnina against Inter.

And despite the 38-year-old being close to another goal in the second half, the Rossoneri couldn’t cope with the intense pressure from the Nerazzurri and it eventually ended in a 4-2 defeat to their arch-rivals.

Sabatini has revealed that Bologna were hoping to bring the influential forward to the Renato Dall’Ara and used the “friendship” between the current coach and the former Inter and Juventus striker.

“He spoke to the coach,” Sabatini told ETV. “We hoped the friendship would prevail.

“But in football it’s never like that.”
