The announcement of his arrival to replace Paulo Fonseca from next season shocked everyone, as until hours beforehand it was widely assumed their negotiations were with Maurizio Sarri.

Sky Sport Italia spoke to someone who knows Roma well, current Bologna director Sabatini, who spent many years at the Stadio Olimpico.

“This is a club soaked in sentiments and protests, a frustrated and disappointed city. This slap in the face from the club made a big impact,” said Sabatini.

“My first reaction wasn’t exactly positive, I thought of a phrase: the opium of the masses.”

This is a quotation from Karl Marx, who was referring to religion as a way of calming the general population and getting them to stay in line.

“The arrival of Mourinho at a club like Roma is like an emotional earthquake, evidently an earthquake that Roma needed. There was this long silence, the club broke that with decision and action.

“I see positive things, quite aside from the fact Mourinho will have to be a coach. Roma are a particularly tough club to handle, even if he is accustomed to it.

“He has won so much, who better than him to light up some hope? Let’s even stop talking about dreams, now it’s hope.”
