Former Roma director Walter Sabatini insists the Giallorossi must keep the faith with Jose Mourinho and reveals he tried to sign Tammy Abraham for Sampdoria.

The Portuguese tactician has been under fire after a difficult start to the Serie A season and the 6-1 defeat to Bodo/Glimt in the Europa Conference League.

Sabatini worked at Roma, Inter, Bologna and Sampdoria over the last few years, so is in an ideal position to give his verdict on Mou’s progress.

“Roma are paying a price for having to spend the summer plugging holes rather than reinforcing the existing squad, but Mourinho requires total faith, he will have time to correct the team in January and I am sure he’ll do it well,” Sabatini told NSL Radio.

“If I was a Roma fan, I’d go and watch a documentary on Massimo Moratti with the Mourinho era. He undoubtedly knows what to do and doesn’t settle, as after winning the first Scudetto with Inter, he had the courage to raise the bar.

“Mourinho’s history speaks for him and Roma should rely on their coach. The only thing they have to do is give Mourinho time, because only he can take this club to another level.”

Abraham also started well at Roma only to then lose his way, but it might not have been his first Serie A experience if things had been different.

“I did try to bring Abraham to Sampdoria when he was still in the Chelsea youth academy, because you could tell he was a superior player. However, Samp were not a draw for him or Chelsea,” continued Sabatini.

“He hasn’t scored many goals so far, but he has enormous potential and just needs time.”

  1. Absolutely 100% agree with what Sabatini says!! It’s going to be hard for Mourinho to succeed though, when the referees do all
    They can to
make sure Roma lose points game in game out….

  2. Master tactician is a true blessing for this team .
Everyone will have a chance playing a different positions, from forward throughout goalkeeper.
His vision , leadership , and compassion and “Bus Parking” theory will take the team to another level…not necessary up or down , but to another level for sure.
