Walter Sabatini assures Erik Lamela is “worth the money,” as his move from River Plate reportedly cost €20m.

It is a considerably higher sum than originally expected, which was €12m, but rumours filtering out from the Giallorossi camp suggest it's closer to €20m including taxes and performance-related bonuses.

“The negotiations are almost concluded, as we are only missing a few details,” director of sport Sabatini told Sky Sport Italia.

“He is a young player who can still improve a lot more, considering all he has shown at his tender age.

“We are paying an important sum, but he is worth the money.”

It is believed Roma will pay the whole sum before August 30, so not in instalments, as recently-relegated River Plate need urgent funds.

Lamela is expected to sign a five-year contract worth €1.2m per season, which could be registered with the authorities as early as this evening.

“I am honoured and excited at the idea of playing for Roma,” wrote the 20-year-old on his Twitter feed.

“Thank you to everyone. I won't let you down.”
