Rumours from Spain suggest that Lionel Messi may join Inter in the summer after his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expires.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner has just over three months left on his contract with the Parisian side and a new deal is not guaranteed, meaning he could again be a free agent in the summer.

Inter were one of the clubs linked with Messi following his exit from Barcelona in the summer of 2021 and vice-president Javier Zanetti confirmed last month that talks were held, admitting “we spoke when there was a chance”.

Spanish journalist Sergio A. Gonzalez reported today that a ‘reliable source’ claimed that Inter were looking to sign Messi in the summer, should he decide not to renew his contract with PSG. An important factor in the talks is the star forward’s friendship with Zanetti.

Despite the rumours, it’s hard to imagine Inter actually having the capability to pull off this deal, being in a delicate financial position amidst president Steven Zhang’s various debt concerns.

  1. Are we kidding? This could have been great five or six years ago. Not now. Serie A is going to be seen as a laughing stock of a league that only gets senior citizen players. Messi is Messi yes, but after the high of the WC there will be an expected decline in motivation and physical ability. Plus it will be expensive to pay him. Is it really worth it for all the marketing hoopla?
