According to Il Tempo newspaper, Rudiger will be the one sacrificed so Roma can keep other sought-after players like Manolas, Miralem Pjanic and Radja Nainggolan.

The 23-year-old arrived on loan from VfB Stuttgart for €4m and can be bought outright for another €9m this summer.

The plan is to sell Rudiger on at a profit for €30m, though so far Chelsea are not prepared to meet that price-tag.

Roma then hope to snap up Umtiti from Olympique Lyonnais, who has just been added to the France squad for Euro 2016 following Jeremy Mathieu’s injury.

That call could raise his asking price to around €20m.
