Antonio Rüdiger praised Roma Coach Luciano Spalletti for his “charisma” and finds Serie A tougher than the Bundesliga.
The German international defender spoke to Il Giornale newspaper ahead of tonight’s showdown for third place with Inter.
“In Italy even the smallest teams are well-prepared tactically, whereas in Germany the games are played at a higher pace.
“Naturally I hope to be at Euro 2016, but first I have a mission with Roma – qualifying for the Champions League. This will be a decisive match for third place.”
Since Spalletti replaced Rudi Garcia, the Giallorossi have won eight Serie A matches in a row.
“He had already been at Roma, so he knew what needed to be done and in what way. Spalletti is working very well on the defensive movements and tactics. The statistics say we concede fewer goals now and defend as a team.
“Spalletti is a Coach with charisma, he is respected by everyone and brought discipline to the group.
“At the start of the season I tried my best, but it wasn’t enough. Now I am in better shape and realise I’m improving all the time. Since December I’ve been more consistent, whereas before I’d have three good games and one bad.”
Rüdiger also struggled in the defeat to Inter at San Siro on Gary Medel’s goal.
“I don’t understand what mistake I was supposed to have made, as it was a daisy-cutter from 25 metres out. I remember a great Roma performance with many chances. Now we’re in better shape and after the performance with Fiorentina, I’m sure Inter will respect us more.
“I really admire Ivan Perisic, as he had such a great season in the Bundesliga. He has great technique, good with both feet, very quick and strong in the air too.
“Third place depends on us now. We’ll give our all from here to the end of the season, then we’ll see where we are.”
Rüdiger was asked what he made of the Francesco Totti controversy, as the legend wants to carry on playing, but struggles to get into the line-up.
“I can only say it is a pleasure to share the locker-room with Francesco. He’s a great character who has done so much for this club.
“Without doubt what struck me most about coming here was the fans. They follow you through thick and thin, I experienced that myself. It’s a wonderful place to live and work, but also tough and perhaps not suited to everyone.”
