The tactician was fired after a 7-0 home defeat to Udinese last weekend, having been repeatedly criticised in public by President Maurizio Zamparini.

“We sold Fabio Simplicio, Edinson Cavani and Simon Kjaer,” Rossi told Avvenire newspaper.

“These were the pillars of each area in the squad. This team has a future, even if it will not be developed immediately. I trust the side will grow.”

Serse Cosmi is now at the helm, but Zamparini was particularly critical of Rossi's lack of defensive organisation.

“When I took Lazio to Champions League qualification, I didn't concede this many goals. It always depends on the characteristics of the players.

“With Mattia Cassani and Federico Balzaretti as full-backs, you need some very fast central defenders who know how to read the situation. Nice tactics are not enough. You need balance and a good split between goals scored and conceded.”

Rossi concedes he could well take some time off from professional management in order to rediscover his roots.

“Either a proposal sparks my interest or I prefer to take time out. I live this profession 24 hours a day, in its totality.

“Now I would like to go back to training kids, as that was my first foray into this sport and I am in truth only working with professionals for the moment.

“I consider myself lucky with the career I've had. I have great respect for those who work in Lega Pro and have almost always only ever signed one-year contracts. My deal with Palermo was set to expire in June anyway.”
