The “lack of credibility” around the Italy squad could prove helpful, claims 1982 World Cup winner Paolo Rossi.

The Azzurri begin their Euro 2012 adventure at 17.00 UK time against trophy holders Spain in Gdansk.

“When Italy start out with a lack of credibility, at the end they always manage to bring out the best in themselves. I believe they can do well again this time,” said the retired striker.

“When Italy start out with a lack of credibility, at the end they always manage to bring out the best in themselves. I believe they can do well again this time,” said the retired striker.

Rossi was a controversial pick for the 1982 World Cup, as he was returning from a lengthy ban over a betting scandal similar to the one that has exploded in recent weeks.

He went on to become top scorer at the tournament as Italy lifted the trophy, much as the Nazionale did after Calciopoli at the 2006 World Cup.

“We have quality players and everything we need to do well, even if clearly the confidence is a little low at the moment.

“All it takes is a good result to raise the Azzurri’s spirits, because we have the talent.”
