Borussia Monchengladbach coach Marco Rose feels the 2-2 draw with Inter was ‘a fair result’ and leaves San Siro with regrets.

It was a dramatic encounter at San Siro, as Romelu Lukaku opened the scoring, then a Ramy Bensebaini penalty and Jonas Hofmann counter-attack turned it all around, before another Lukaku goal at the 90th.

“I thought the result was fair considering what we saw on the pitch,” said Rose in his press conference.

“We didn’t develop the play as well as I thought we would, but overall we made the most of our scoring opportunities. You can tell there’s a lack of experience in the side.

“It’s difficult to play at San Siro, because even without fans, the visiting teams are still influenced by the atmosphere and we were too respectful of Inter in the first half.

“We were unable to do everything we prepared, as we didn’t spend enough time in the opposition penalty area. It was a strong ending and the final half-hour really decided the match.

“I’d have happily taken a draw here, but considering how the game was going, it’s a pity we didn’t do better on their equaliser.”

The group is wide open, because Real Madrid suffered a shock 3-2 home defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk.

“It shows we must take it one game at a time with the utmost focus. Real Madrid will be fired up and angry, while we take the positives from our match in Milan.

“After so many years out of the Champions League, it’s inevitable we’re going to be a little naïve at the beginning. We bring a great deal of enthusiasm to the competition, though.”
