Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo will go head-to-head with Lionel Messi and Virgil van Dijk tonight to be crowned The Best FIFA Men’s Player of 2019.

Ronaldo won the award in 2016 and 2017, and he has a good case to add to his haul at th  Teatro alla Scala in Milan this evening.

The No 7 helped Juve to an eighth straight Scudetto with his 28 goals last season and captained Portugal to glory at the inaugural Nations League.

He comes up against Messi, who won La Liga with Barcelona in 2018-19 and continues to break records.

The rivals are joined on the podium by Van Dijk after he lifted the Champions League with Liverpool. 

The Dutchman is also striving to become the first defender to win an award of its kind since Italy icon Fabio Cannavaro took home both the Ballon d’Or and FIFA World Player of the Year prize in 2006.

FIFA devised The Best Men’s Player award after it ended its link with France Football and the Ballon d’Or in 2016.

“Voting to decide the winner took place from 31 July to 19 August 2019 and was equally weighted between fans, journalists, national team Coaches and captains,” explained the governing body on its official website.
