Barcelona, meanwhile, are playing city rivals Espanyol on Saturday and, as an Argentine, Messi will go to watch the game the following day.

The newspaper believes that Real Madrid President Florentino Perez wants to put the two together in the presidential box, as a mark of respect for their achievements over the past decade or more.

Ronaldo and Messi have been considered as the world’s best players for many years, with a rivalry developing between them.

CR7 is the top-scorer in Champions League history, with Messi second, with both achieving over 600 career goals.

They have both won the Ballon d’Or five times, and have scored at least 40 goals in every season since 2009-10.

Luka Modric won the Ballon d'Or last night, the first time since 2007 it has gone to someone other than Messi or Ronaldo.
