Cristiano Ronaldo told Atalanta ‘we are Manchester United and we never give up,’ but the Italian papers reviewed his performance as ‘pitiful until the late goal.’

It was a thriller at Old Trafford in the Champions League last night, as Atalanta went 2-0 up by half-time with goals from Mario Pasalic and Merih Demiral.

However, the injuries took their toll as the game wore on and Manchester United came back to win 3-2 with Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire and the late Ronaldo towering header.

“Yes! The Theater of Dreams is on fire! We are alive! We are Man. United and we never give up! This is Old Trafford!” wrote Ronaldo on Instagram.

CR7 had also found the net late on in the other Manchester United Champions League victory over Villarreal.

However, his performance up until the decisive goal certainly did not impress the Italian media.

La Gazzetta dello Sport described Ronaldo’s game as ‘practically pitiful until the late goal.’

Tuttosport, who are based in Turin along with his former club Juventus, admit they’ve seen it all before. ‘When he’s needed, he turns up.’

The Corriere dello Sport saw Ronaldo as ‘irritable and below par until the final minute, but then he hits the high note of a champion.’

  1. As an Italian it’s amazing how much they can be irrational.

The most important and most difficult thing to do in the sport is to score a goal.

The guy delivers the goods time and time again. He could be one of the most clutch players of all time. Even for Juventus while his teammates aside from Chiesa struggled, Ronaldo was scoring almost all the time. Especially during the champions league and that was with PITIFUL service and overall ball movement on behalf of his teammates
