Cristiano Ronaldo been taken to his Turin home for quarantine, as local authorities explain why it’s the right course of action following his COVID-19 diagnosis.

The Juventus star tested positive during international duty in Portugal and had initially been self-isolating at a hotel.

He took a private jet to fly back to Turin and landed this afternoon, where he was then taken by ambulance to his home so he could continue the quarantine period.

“Cristiano Ronaldo returned to Italy with a medical flight authorised by the competent health authorities at the request of the player and will continue his fiduciary isolation at his home,” read a statement from Juventus.

Some saw this as another breaking of the rules, but director of Turin ASL (local health authority) Roberto Testi told La Gazzetta dello Sport this was entirely within his rights.

“I don’t know the precise details of this situation, but the rules do permit someone to request a private flight registered as a medical journey with all the various authorities.

“He can then take an ambulance – private, of course – and be taken to his home for quarantine lasting at least 10 days.”

Juve teammate Weston McKennie also tested positive for COVID-19 today, sending the entire squad into fiduciary self-isolation at the J-Hotel.

The surge in cases is not just in football, as Italy is being hit by a second wave of the virus.

There were 7,332 new positive cases registered in the last 24 hours and 43 people died.

It means there are currently 92,445 people in Italy currently infected with COVID-19.
