Cristiano Ronaldo appears to have aimed a subtle dig at his old club Juventus during a conversation with his former Bianconeri teammate Wojciech Szczesny who has recently joined Barcelona, despite announcing his decision to retire over the summer.

“You needed to retire to get to a big club,” Ronaldo was heard saying to Szczesny in a video that has been widely circulated online.

The pair met in the mixed zone of the National Stadium in Warsaw as Portugal recorded a 3-1 victory away against Poland on Saturday night.

Ronaldo stopped to take pictures with Szczesny’s children while asking about if he was happy with his recent move to Barcelona.

Ronaldo then made a joke about his old teammate having to retire to get to ‘a big club’.

Szczesny announced his decision to retire from professional football in August, terminating his Juventus contract by mutual consent. Despite representing the Bianconeri for over eight years, his position as a starter had been compromised by the summer signing of Michele Di Gregorio from Monza.

He then came out of retirement to sign for Barcelona on a deal until the end of the season to cover the long-term injury to club captain Marc-Andre ter Stegem
