Roma midfielder Gonzalo Villar is reportedly only a step away from joining Sampdoria on loan.

The 24-year-old Spaniard did not convince Jose Mourinho in the first half of last season, so he was sent to Getafe on a six-month loan spell. Villar returned from his time in Iberia last month, but still hasn’t managed to woe the Portuguese coach, so a departure this summer was inevitable.

As reported by TMW, Roma and Sampdoria are now working to finalise the details of Villar’s loan move, which’ll contain either a buy option or obligation to buy clause. The 24-year-old has been Marco Giampaolo’s top midfield target for weeks now and things are finally entering the decisive stages.

Roma signed Villar from Elche in January 2020 in a deal worth around €5m. He’s made 63 appearances for the Giallorossi, providing one assist in that time. He’ll be hoping to relaunch his career a little following a tough period in the Italian capital.
