Roma defender Gianluca Mancini has been handed a punishment after waving a flag showing the Lazio colours with a rat on it following the Derby della Capitale win.
The Giallorossi edged out a tense 1-0 victory over their bitter rivals after a first-half header from the 27-year-old defender, keeping them hot on the heels of Bologna in the race for Champions League qualification. It was Roma’s first derby win in over two years.
Mancini sparked anger amongst the Lazio fanbase after the full-time whistle, when he celebrated the victory by waving a flag with the Biancocelesti colours and a rat on it. Tensions were already sky high, with both fan bases allegedly chanting racist abuse at each other and some players.
Mancini punishment
As announced today, Serie A sports judge Gerardo Mastrandrea has ruled on the Mancini case, deciding to give the Roma defender a €5000 for ‘waving an offensive banner towards the opposing team’s fans’. Consequently, the 27-year-old has avoided picking up a ban for the incident.
Investigations are still ongoing regarding the alleged racist chanting from sections of the Lazio and Roma stands.
