It’s been a fairy tale season for Alessandro Spugna’s Roma but their debut Women’s Champions League campaign came to an abrupt end after a dominant showing from Barcelona.
The Giallorosse are hungry to break Juventus’ hold on Serie A Femminile and currently sit top of the league table in the early stages of the second phase, sitting five points above the Bianconere with a game in hand.
In the first phase of the season, Roma suffered only two defeats in the league and looked equally as impressive in the Champions League, finishing second in a group containing VfL Wolfsburg, St Polten and Slavia Praha.
Spugna’s Giallorosse are also aiming for the Coppa Italia this season, qualifying for the final after a tense 3-2 aggregate win over Milan in the semi-finals.
Led by talismanic forward and top scorer Valentina Giacinti, Roma put up a tough fight in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie with Barcelona, one of the best sides in the world.
Playing in a packed Stadio Olimpico, the Giallorosse only suffered a 1-0 loss to the Blaugrana, giving them hope for a sensational second leg comeback in Catalonia.
Unfortunately for Roma, things didn’t go to plan in Spain and they fell victim to Barcelona’s onslaught, falling in a 5-1 loss, looking thoroughly outclassed by a team aiming for European glory.
Annamaria Serturini scored the Giallorosse’s only goal of the game, but it meant little as Fridolina Rolfo, Maria Pilar Leon, Asisat Oshoala and Patricia Guijarro all found the back of the net for the home side.
Despite the defeat and elimination, Roma can still be proud of their work in their debut Champions League season, looking a raw but talented side hungry to continue their growth.
Spugna and his squad can now return focus to Serie A, where they’re fighting for their first ever Scudetto. The team finished five points behind Juventus last season and now they’re hungry to take revenge, with the Coppa Italia being the cherry on top of their sensational season.
