New Lazio signing Alessio Romagnoli commented on the differences between Maurizio Sarri and Stefano Pioli, suggesting that his style is better suited to the former.

The 27-year-old Italian left Milan on a free transfer last month, forcing him to find a new home. Despite links with various clubs, a move to Lazio always seemed set in stone and after a long set of negotiations, a deal was completed. Romagnoli has signed a five-year contract with an option for a sixth with the Roman club.

Speaking at a press conference, Romagnoli first discussed his arrival at Lazio and how it felt to join the club he’s supported since childhood.

I always hoped for it, we’ve been talking about this opportunity for a long time. Both parties have always wanted it.

I thank the sporting director and president for this opportunity, it has always been my dream and I was sure I would come here. My family supported me through everything, they were as happy as I was.

The Italian centre back touched on his physical condition and the differences between Maurizio Sarri and Stefano Pioli.

I’m much better than I was, although still missing a little something. Sarri’s game is more tactical, Pioli’s was different, it was more one-on-one in large areas of the pitch. This game suits me more and I like it better.

Finally, Romagnoli commented his and Lazio’s goals ahead of the upcoming campaign.

The team’s goal is to qualify for the Champions League because we’re strong, a good squad. I have always told Tare over the years that this is a strong team.

For me it will be important to play more than last year. Despite having had several problems, I have to try to give my best and play as many games as possible. The main goal, I repeat, is as a team and that’s to get to the Champions League.

During his six years in Milan, Romagnoli helped the side win a Supercoppa Italiana and a Scudetto. He made 247 appearances across all competitions for the club and became captain at the start of the 2018-19 season.

  1. It was sad to see romagnoli go but it would be nice if he could just talk about Lazio instead of bringing Milan and the manager up every time he gets the chance!

  2. Rosario, it is just his thoughts about the game, why should he not tell his opinion?! Sarri is much better coach than Pioli after all, Pioli just happened to win the scudetto in a fluke year. Sarri also has won scudetto, europa league and his teams have played much better football than Piolis.

  3. Although there’s so much fuss about Roma in the capitale, I’m quite sure that Lazio under Sarri will start playing great football. We could see glimpses of it last season, this one will be even better. To bad they don’t have a bit mroe money, to spend on proper reinforcements, because Sarri can deliver. He already knows how ti win in Europe, as well as has an experience of winning the Scudetto, so his Lzio, by next season, could easily transform into what Napoli was under him – one of the most attractive teams in all of Europe, real entertainers.
It’s just a shame to watch them playing on that huge stadium, when, unlike Roma, they can’t fulfill it. THey’d be perfectly suited for a stadium of 40-45K, especially that one, Aquille (one of the most mind-blowing stadium designs I’ve ever seen, along with what was supposed t be Fiorentin’s new stadium) would make Lazio pat of European ellite, under Sarri and in such a stadium. To bad it’s impossible for a team in Italy to build a stadium! So, we’ll watch this great Lazio playing in front of empty stands again! Shame!

  4. Dimitri, Lazio‘s season tickets are currently 4th in Italy behind only two milanese teams and Riomma whose tickets were is discount. Lazio has sold above 20000 season tickets, equal to Juventus. If the team is playing good and fights in the top, Olimpico will have at least 50000 fans per game.

  5. giardini di marzo

Scudetto won in a fluke year hahaha

Ripped you such a big backside that you’re still crying I see!

  6. the good sarrismo was only displayed on naples.. while it was a fluke when he won scudetto with juve and got fired in the next season.. and also with chelsea, he should have won more with those superstars squad.

  7. Rosario, your coach is a bad coach, deal with it, and watch where you will finish this year. He didn’t achieve anything anywhere except last season.
Julian, Sarri managed to win scudetto with Ronaldo in Juventus, that is a miracle by itself. See where Juventus finished with Pirlo and Allegri.

  8. @ I giardini di marzo

Pioli is a bad coach? Stop talking you are just making a big fool out of yourself. So much nonsense

  9. You have to love when a terrible coach flukes 38 games in a row and wins a league. It’s so incredible it almost has to be fiction.

I can always rely on people on here to talk unenviable amounts of drivel possible.

Pioli joins Milan, the team immediately pick up post the first lockdown and football resuming, putting in a brilliant end to the season. New season starts, and they pick up where they left off, spending half a season top of the league and eventually finishing 2nd and back in the champions league. Then the new season starts and Milan continue to spend the entire season in the top 2, unbeaten in the last 16 games and win the league.

Last season, Milan played Sarri’s Lazio 3 times and won on each occasion.

Since 14/15 season, a team managed by Pioli has never finished below 10th. Out of 8 seasons, he has managed to finish 7th or better in 6 of those seasons.

7 years younger than Sarri and yet Sarri only managed to make it to Serie A at the age of 56, and win a title at Juventus who has been winning for years – arguably sarri beginning their downfall.

Personally I like Sarri but to call pioli a bad coach and his achievements with Milan a fluke is both a sign of being resentful and deluded beyond repair.
