Roma had wanted to hold a big presentation ceremony for new coach Jose Mourinho at the Colosseum, it’s reported, but they weren’t allowed to proceed due to red tape issues.

The former Inter, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur tactician was appointed to replace Paulo Fonseca and his contract begins on July 1.

According to Il Tempo newspaper, the plan from the Giallorossi was to introduce Mou to the supporters by packing them into the Colosseum, the most famous remaining structure from Ancient Rome to still stand tall in the centre of the Eternal City.

Another option would’ve been the Trinità dei Monti, the Renaissance church that leads onto the Spanish Steps and Piazza di Spagna.

However, the local council refused to give permission for the event, so Roma have been forced to think of another venue for their Mourinho spectacle.

The Stadio Olimpico is a possible candidate once the Euro 2020 fixtures have been completed there, especially as fans are now allowed in for a 25 per cent capacity.
