Vertonghen has extended his contract with Tottenham Hotspur until the end of the season but, having fallen down their pecking order, his long-term future remains in doubt.

“I can’t say much, but things are moving,” the defender told Sporza.

“Most teams are waiting for the season to end and until they’re sure of TV money coming in.

“Timo Werner’s transfer to Chelsea already proves that there is still enough money in the market.

“Once the ball starts rolling again, it’ll all be fine.”

Roma have been heavily linked with bringing in the 33-year-old, as a possible replacement for Chris Smalling, as have fellow Serie A sides Napoli, Inter and Fiorentina.
