Former Roma director Monchi ‘turned down’ the chance to sign Lautaro Martinez from Racing Club in January 2018 for €8m, revealed an agent.

The striker eventually joined Inter for €25m in July that year, and is now part of a bidding war with Barcelona, Manchester United, Chelsea and Real Madrid at €111m.

“I had offered Lautaro Martinez to Roma in January 2018 for €8m,” agent and intermediary Luis Ruzzi told Tuttomercatoweb.

“That was the release clause that Racing had at that moment, but the Giallorossi didn’t take it up. There were also talks with Atletico Madrid that were important, but didn’t turn into anything concrete.

“On January 20, the Racing President changed the clause, raising it to €20m, and then Inter did the rest.”

It’s not entirely new for Roma to have rejected future star strikers, as Sabino Nelo had also told the Corriere dello Sport about Erling Haaland.

“I proposed Haaland to Monchi two years ago and he cost €4m, but the club decided against it and he went to RB Salzburg.”
