The Stadio dello Roma project was given the all-clear at the end of 2017, but it was then held up by the arrest of nine people linked to the arena’s construction, among them contractor Luca Parnasi.
Nonetheless, Raggi told Gazzetta dello Sport: “We have the political will to resume the stadium project as soon as possible.
“We’re working in compliance with the law and the interests of our citizens. I was against the old project, which would’ve seen yet more cement poured In the city.
“I remember how the project foresaw that, on 1m square metres of cement, the stadium would’ve filled just 14 percent of it.
“We’ve improved the project by making it innovative and eco-sustainable. We’ve reduced its volume by 50 percent, with buildings that reduce their environmental impact, the most advanced energy standards in the world and while overcoming the hydrogeological risk of the area.
“What’s missing? First of all, I’m waiting for the outcome of the opinions that I asked for at the Politecnico di Torino and then we’ll think about any changes in town-planning.
“It’s not something we owe but I felt that, after everything we read in the newspapers, the citizens have the right to further study.
“There are some open questions: for example, I still believe that we should invest more on the Rome-Lido railway line connecting the city centre to Ostia.
“That way, the project would be even more beautiful and useful to the city.
“The Lazio region is the owner of the line and, for about three years, has reserved €180m for upgrades to that specific route, which it has yet to spend.”
