The Englishman has been training apart from the group and played his last competitive game against Genoa on March 7.

He is dealing with a muscle injury that seems to be caused by problems in his knee. Therefore, he reportedly flew to Barcelona for a specialist consultation with knee surgeon Ramon Cugat earlier last week.

According to Il Romanista, Smalling began a growth factor therapy during the international break, and Cugat suggested continuing it for a few weeks.

Meantime, Smalling has only played ten Serie A games this season, 961 minutes in total. He has 18 appearances across all competitions this term.

The former Red Devil joined Roma in a €15m deal from Manchester United in October after he had spent the previous campaign on loan in the Capital.
