Multiple sources in Italy claim Roma will appoint club legend Daniele De Rossi to replace José Mourinho. ‘Only the announcement is missing,’ reports La Gazzetta dello Sport.
Roma announced Mourinho’s sacking on Tuesday morning, two days after a 3-1 loss against Milan in Serie A and a week after a 1-0 defeat against city rivals Lazio in Coppa Italia.
The Giallorossi said: “Further updates on the new First Team coaching staff will follow imminently.”
According to multiple Italian sources, including Fabrizio Romano and Gazzetta, De Rossi is the designated Mourinho replacement at the Stadio Olimpico.
The 2006 Italy World Cup winner is a club legend, having come through the club’s academy and making 616 appearances for the Giallorossi at a senior level.
La Gazzetta dello Sport claims De Rossi has already accepted Roma’s offer, so the Giallorossi will soon announce him as their new head coach.
‘Only the announcement is missing,’ claimed the pink paper.
De Rossi was Roberto Mancini’s assistant at Euro 2020 and has only been in charge of one professional team in his coaching career.
SPAL appointed him in October 2022, but he was sacked in February 2023 after winning just three games from 17.
According to Gazzetta, De Rossi has also been chosen by Roma owners for his solid bond with the club and the fans, most of whom strongly backed Mourinho.
