The Swiss international did have a very brief spell in Serie A with Inter for six months in 2015.

This season he has scored four goals with two assists in 21 Premier League appearances for Stoke, who cost them €17m.

Other options for Roma to replace Salah come from Eusebio Di Francesco’s old club Sassuolo, as both Berardi and Defrel can take wide roles.

Rachid Ghezzal is a free agent from Olympique Lyonnais, but Roma face competition from Milan.
