Roma could be forced to give Chris Smalling back to Manchester United if they fail to qualify for the Champions League, it’s reported.

The centre-back arrived on loan from Old Trafford with relatively low expectations, but has settled in very quickly and rediscovered his confidence.

It’s a big expenditure, especially considering Roma already paid €3m just for the season-long loan.

His salary of €3.5m per year is also considered to be a significant investment.

According to Calciomercato.com, the figures simply don’t add up unless Roma have the additional funds that come from Champions League qualification.

They would need to either finish in the top four of Serie A or win the Europa League to secure their place in the tournament
