Roma loaned out several young players, but it’s reportedly all-out war between the club and Steven Nzonzi, Davide Santon and Federico Fazio, who turned down moves.

The Giallorossi had to cut down the squad and were active over the last few days to place some of their younger elements elsewhere.

Riccardo Ciervo was loaned to Sampdoria, Zan Celar to FC Lugano, Ruben Providence to Club Brugge, Devid Eugene Bouah to Teramo and Robin Olsen to Sheffield United.

However, Roma are stuck with three senior players who earn large amounts and are refusing to move on.

While Javier Pastore terminated his contract by mutual consent in order to organise his own future, the tension with the other three remains.

According to Calciomercato.com, Nzonzi rejected offers from Benfica, Lille and clubs in Qatar.

Fazio turned down Genoa and is even seemingly taking legal action demanding he be brought back into the Roma squad.

As for Santon, he was linked with Fulham on deadline day, but the move never materialised, following on from a failed January transfer to Turkey.

There are now limited options for leagues where they can be sold or loaned and Roma are not prepared to pay their outstanding wages just to get them off the books.

14 thought on “Roma rebels infuriate the club”
  1. This serves the club right, when you sign players on high wages it’s your obligation to pay them as long as they’re contracted to you

  2. Actually Franky, these mercenaries received and rejected offers that would’ve extended contracts beyond their current Roma ones AND in the case of Nzombie he would’ve had a pay rise too! So it doesn’t serve the club right at all. They would rather collect wages for a year without playing than move on to another club for 2-3 years, while still playing. These are mercenaries who have no desire to play nor love for the game.

  3. I wish I could sit on my behind and get paid the same way these clowns do. I remember Florentino Perez saying that he paid the world record fee at the time for Cristiano and said it was his gift to the world as he can share him with everyone and comparing him to a painting that was hidden away from the public. Obviously, he made his money back on Cristiano. But N’zonzi is no artist and is given one of the most desirable jobs a guy could have and still makes a mockery of it. To him, it’s just a job and he must be spiting Roma for not giving him the playing time he wanted.

  4. They are 3 players that are certainly not needed, but like Pastore, Nzonzi was bought for a ridiculously high fee that made no sense at the time. That’s Roma‘s fault for buying those 2 in the first place – 2 mindless signings.
As for the new season, Mourinho can just let them rot in the reserves for the full year. As I said, none are needed.

  5. I do not understand, for us as normal people if we hired for a job and do not perform, the employer you will be given a notice of 2 weeks and then have to leave. Why can not be the same thing got applied to these players?

  6. Boori, I can also find a new job and give notice to my employer if I’m not happy, can a player do that? Clubs profiting with transfer fees is nothing more than modern day legalised slavery. Why does Real make $100m selling Ronaldo to Juve? How does his football ability belong to them?

  7. give nzozi to juventus. they love mercenaries and they used to chased nzombie for alegri reasons.
players like chiesa, fede, chiello, buffon are rare. grinta is rare commodity.
most player especially foreigner will be sitting back and enjoying the money given to them.
but there is no obligation to give anything back.
and as long as they are under contracts, they have to be paysno matter what.
football club has to be professional. but zombie and mercenaries player can di whaterver they want, it is not their faults, it is the club + manager fault.

  8. Those three players are a problem to the team. They should be either sold or loaned or just sit because they don’t want to go forward as they are doubting whether their skills help them elsewhere

  9. If you perform well, you can ask and demand first team… (normal in daily job).
but if not, the company have the right to ask you to leave or just maintain your dignity.
Not playing but keep receiving salary and not wanting to leave are showing your trash behaviour.
    PERIOD.

  10. Rogue,

Firstly, slaves didnt get paid, they were tortured & de-humanised. To compare football to slavery is disrespectful.

Secondly, Clubs are not selling ‘talent’, they are selling contracts, which are agreed to by all parties.

e.g. Mbappe will go wherever he wants as a free agent next year but right now as long as he is under CONTRACT, PSG have a right to ask for a €200M fee, because €200M this is what they stand to loose in prize money, TV & commercial sales with him not on the team.

Mbappe & his agent will get Millions in signing bonuses from Madrid. This is not slavery, its business.

  11. What is the worst for AS Roma fans is that Roma agreed a four-year contract worth €2 million plus bonuses with Zakaria, transfer fee in the region of 15m. Because Nzonzi refused to leave, they could not make it happen.

I only hope Marotta is preparing the next masterclass of free transfers, Zakaria will be a great signing – especially for free.
