Stade Rennais are not taking up their option to buy Steven Nzonzi, but Roma could even let him go to Benfica for free.

The midfielder moved to Rennes on loan with option to buy in January 2020, but did not do enough to convince the Ligue 1 club to make the move permanent.

He made 39 competitive appearances for them this season, with one goal and one assist.

Roma paid €26m to sign Nzonzi from Sevilla in 2018, but biggest expense of Monchi’s reign, and also failed to settle during another brief loan at Galatasaray.

According to O Jogo, Roma are even prepared to let him leave on a free transfer just to get his salary off their books.

Benfica are interested in giving the 32-year-old a chance in Portugal if he is available for free.
