Roma put on a show for Olimpico crowd

Roma turned on the style at the Stadio Olimpico in a 5-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk, which saw Nicolò Zaniolo, Paulo Dybala and Tammy Abraham combine, while Georginio Wijnaldum made his debut.

This was the final pre-season friendly and also the official presentation of the squad to the fans, so 65,303 packed into the arena to participate in the event.

Jose Mourinho picked an all-attack formation with Dybala and Zaniolo supporting Tammy Abraham, plus new buys Nemanja Matic and Zeki Celik in midfield.

The deadlock was broken after 19 minutes with real style, as Lorenzo Pellegrini fired in after a series of one-touch passes from Zaniolo, Dybala and Abraham.

Zaniolo’s curler thumped the upright before his cheeky dummy allowed Abraham’s pass to go through for unmarked Gianluca Mancini.

Moments later, Yukhym Konoplya accidentally put the ball into his own net when trying to anticipate Leonardo Spinazzola on a Matic assist.

Zaniolo got his goal on the hour mark, running onto the Stephan El Shaarawy pass and slipping the finish under the goalkeeper.

Gini Wijnaldum was given a standing ovation as he made his debut off the bench, but Pellegrini was unlucky not to add another goal when his ferocious strike bounced off the crossbar, hit the goalkeeper’s back and ricocheted back out.

Edoardo Bove did get the fifth late on, sweeping in from 12 yards on the El Shaarawy assist.
