Roma star Nicolò Zaniolo has been given a three-match ban in the Europa League after his red card against Real Betis, so will miss all the remaining group stage games, but the club is planning an appeal.

The Italy international was sent off for a completely futile kick out at an opponent in an off the ball situation during the final minutes of the 2-1 home defeat to Real Betis.

He has already missed one game, but UEFA have informed Roma that Zaniolo has been given a further two-match ban for that incident.

That means Zaniolo will not be able to play the final two group games against HJK Helsinki and Ludogorets.

Roma are currently third in Europa League Group C, as Real Betis are on 10 points, Ludogorets seven, Roma four and HJK only one.

The Giallorossi are expected to appeal against the ruling and hope to have the ban at least reduced to a total two matches rather than three.

  1. Since decades ago, all competitions have disciplinary commissions that can increase the ban based on how unsportsmanlike or violent it was. For example, when he bit Ivanović 10 years ago, Suarez got 3 match ban from the disciplinary commission, but then a separate panel increased it to 10. DDR I think also got 3 matches banned for the Slapadula.

  2. Look, I’m a Roma fan of over 40 years. Am I the only one that thinks Zaniolo is a talented yet entititled immature donkey who dives way too much and expects every call to be in his favor? His temper is another problem and he does seem to fit the definition of a “team player”

  3. No matter how good he thinks of himself, never will be a great player when he has such bad behaviours and kicked a player out of nothing in a off playing event. Roma should sell him for a good price.

  4. @il Romanista: Having a bad temper is not completely a negative thing. Don’t you remember Totti kicked balotteli or spat on Danish player, or DDR hit players with the elbow several times? Don’t get me wrong I am not saying they did a good thing simply I am saying it’s a sign of that they care and they have a fighter spirit and they can not simply take a lose which is a good thing. I wish Zaniollo works on his behavior but I kind of like him.

  5. I like Nico too but the refs obviously don’t. He’s gone have to learn how to deal with the situation better.
