According to reports in Italy, Roma have opened preliminary talks to sign Atalanta midfielder Remo Freuler in January.

The Giallorossi are on the lookout for reinforcements in the middle of the park.

According to Calciomercato.com and La Repubblica newspaper, the Swiss international is among their top targets.

Atalanta have activated their option to extend Freuler’s expiring contract until 2023, but the midfielder is reportedly considering terminating his time in Bergamo after seven years at the club.

According to the report, Roma will try to sign the player in the winter transfer window by offering €10m.

Napoli have also set their sights on the 29-year-old who is a regular starter under Gian Piero Gasperini.

Roma beat Atalanta 4-1 on Saturday and sit fifth in the Serie A table, six points behind La Dea in fourth.

It remains to be seen if the Bergamo-based club will sell one of their best players to a direct contender in the middle of the campaign.
