Roma have announced that Georginio Wijnaldum has fractured his tibia and will probably require surgery after just one game.

The midfielder is on loan from Paris Saint-Germain with an option to buy that could become an obligation under certain circumstances.

It now remains to be seen how long he will be out for, as this is a serious injury that was sustained during a training session today.

“Following an injury sustained during training on Sunday afternoon, Georginio Wijnaldum subsequently underwent medical tests that confirmed the presence of a fracture to the tibia in his right leg.

“The player will undergo further assessments in the coming days. FORZA GINI!”

Wijnaldum was greeted at the airport by hundreds of fans when making the long-awaited move from PSG and made his debut off the bench in the 1-0 victory away to Salernitana.

The 31-year-old Dutch international was hoping to make his first competitive appearance at the Stadio Olimpico in tomorrow evening’s match with Cremonese.

However, he is now ruled out and could well need surgery or a lengthy lay-off.

Wijnaldum will turn 32 in November and already had a series of injury problems last season, which limited his playing time at Paris Saint-Germain.
