Roma have hired former referee Gianpaolo Calvarese to talk the players and coach Jose Mourinho through officiating and the VAR protocol.

The Giallorossi have repeatedly protested at the decisions in their games over the course of this season, criticising the use of VAR or failure to view the on-field monitor, depending on the situation.

Their confusion over how and when the decisions should be made prompted the club to hire retired referee Calvarese in order to help them better understand the current rules and regulations.

He is working not only with Mourinho’s team, but also the women’s squad and the Primavera youth team in their academy.

Calvarese has been working as a match analyst for Amazon Prime Italia coverage of the Champions League and will do similar explanations behind the scenes for Roma.

It is hoped his presence can also help the Giallorossi to smooth over the growing tension with current referees and make it a more diplomatic relationship going forward.

  1. Roma actually had less controversy than other teams. It’s just Mou reacts even if the calls were correct and his team lost.

  2. @Rosso. Are you kidding? Look at how many refs got suspended after they ref a Roma game this season. Both referees for the Roma Milan games got suspended and demoted and you want to say Roma got less controversy than other teams? Unbelievable you Milanisti…..
