Roma are still hoping to complete a deal for Germany veteran and current free agent Mats Hummels, but there is a looming deadline to get the deal done. Meanwhile, Galatasaray have emerged as contenders to sign the 35-year-old if the Giallorossi move does not pan out.

Where Roma stand with Hummels

According to reports from Corriere dello Sport, Roma have offered Hummels a contract until the end of the season with an option to renew, which can be triggered automatically if he plays in over 50% of matches in 2024-25.

Tuesday’s report confirms that Roma offered €2m to bring Hummels on board until the end of the season. The Giallorossi consider that generous, considering that there are now 10 months remaining of the 2024-25 season, not 12.

Hummels has taken his time to reflect on the offer with his father, Hermann, who is also his personal manager.

The Giallorossi need to complete the deal quickly if they wish to include Hummels on their Europa League squad list for the 2024-25 season.

The deadline to submit Europa League squads to UEFA is tonight at 23.00 UK time (midnight CET), so Roma will need to have the deal completed before then if they wish to use Hummels in the first half of the Europa League campaign.

Hummels also has interest coming from Galatasaray in Turkey, who recently secured a deal with Napoli for the loan of Victor Osimhen.

Galatasaray had originally been targeting a move for Mario Hermoso, who has since joined Roma instead, and so they are also still on the lookout for a new centre-back.

Reports earlier on Tuesday suggested that Roma could turn to either Kostas Manolas or Joel Matip if they are unable to secure a deal for Hummels.

  1. Why oh why are they signing this guy…great 10 years ago but well past it..Honestly Roma‘s signings are mediocre and make no sense.
