Roma were furious and above all bemused when the referee disallowed a Sardar Azmoun goal for dangerous play against Brighton in the Europa League.
The Giallorossi already had a 4-0 first leg advantage going into the Amex Stadium and thought they had gone 1-0 up when Azmoun pounced on a ricochet and acrobatically hooked it back over his head.
However, German referee Felix Zwayer immediately disallowed it for dangerous play, even though if anything it was Jan Paul van Hencke who propelled his head towards Azmoun’s foot.
Had the official not given that call, then VAR would likely not have intervened, but as he made the decision on the pitch, the officials in the booth felt they had insufficient cause to overturn it.
There is tension in this match, with both coached Roberto De Zerbi and Daniele De Rossi booked for dissent, along with six players.
The referee denies Roma the lead through an unbelievable acrobatic finish 👀
