Roma have been fined €8.000 following racist chants from their fans targeting Dejan Stankovic, but the sporting judge revealed that the sanction was mitigated thanks to José Mourinho’s intervention.

Roma fans in the Curva Sud insulted Stankovic with racist chants during a 3-0 win over Sampdoria on Sunday.

It all started when Doria were reduced to 10 men and Stankovic reacted furiously with his protests.

Hearing the chants, Mourinho walked off his bench towards that end of the stadium and waved to make them stop.

The Sporting judge has confirmed an €8.000 fine for the Giallorossi but revealed that Mourinho’s intervention helped his club avoid a harsher penalty.

“Roma have been fined €8.000 following insulting chants towards the opposing coach by the entirety of supporters in Curva Sud,” the Sporting Judge said in a statement.

“The sanction is mitigated because chants were not repeated after the active intervention of their coach.”

Stankovic is a former Lazio and Inter midfielder and won the treble with the Special One in charge of the Nerazzurri in 2010.

The 44-year-old played 81 games under Mourinho at Inter, scoring 10 goals and delivering as many assists.
