Roma are reportedly considering Jan Vertonghen, Kevin Akpoguma and Jean-Clair Todibo as possible replacements for Chris Smalling.
Smalling has been a revelation during his season-long loan at Roma this season, but Tuttosport writes their poor financial situation and the fees involved could scupper a permanent deal.
The newspaper claims United value the defender at €20m, while he will earn €3m a season for the next three years if he stays at Old Trafford, although his club would rather cash in.

With that in mind, the Giallorossi would be targeting Vertonghen, who is also a target for Inter and Napoli.
The 33-year-old has played over 300 times for Tottenham Hotspur and has more than 100 caps for Belgium.
He is set to become a free agent next month, with his contract in North London about to expire.
Failing that, Tuttosport also states Roma sporting director Gianluca Petrachi is tracking Akpoguma and has been offered Todibo.
Akpoguma, 25, is a former Germany Under-21 international of Nigerian extract and plays for Bundesliga side Hoffenheim.
Todibo, meanwhile, is currently on loan at Schalke from Barcelona but seems unlikely to stay in Gelsenkirchen beyond this summer.
