Roma have officially announced the appointment of 73-year-old Claudio Ranieri as head coach until the end of the 2024-25 season with a future role as a sporting advisor to the Giallorossi owners at the end of the campaign.

Ranieri was selected as the successor to Ivan Juric, who was dismissed from his position at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday afternoon. Roma are now onto their fourth permanent coach in 2024, after the spells of Jose Mourinho, Daniele De Rossi and Juric.

Roma are currently 12th in Serie A with 13 points from their first 12 matches of the 2024-25 campaign.

“Born in Rome and a lifelong Romanista, Ranieri wore the Giallorossi jersey as a player during the 1973-74 season and later served as the team’s head coach on two separate occasions (from 2009 to 2011 and in 2019). He is a true symbol of the Club’s values and one of the most respected Roman sports figures worldwide,” a statement on the club website read.

This will be Ranieri’s third spell in charge of Roma, following stints in 2009-11 and 2019. Ranieri was also born in the capital and made his senior debut as a player for the Giallorossi back in 1973.

Ranieri has most recently been in charge of Cagliari, guiding the Isolani to promotion from Serie B at the end of the 2023-24 season, before seemingly announcing his retirement from coaching

The 73-year-old is perhaps best known to the wider, international football community as the mastermind behind Leicester City’s miraculous, odds-defying storm to the Premier League title in 2015-16.

Roma announce future backroom role for Ranieri

Roma have also announced that Ranieri will transition into a backroom role after his duties in charge of the first team are complete.

He will act as an advisor to the club’s ownership group on all sporting matters beginning from the summer onwards, including the search for a new, permanent head coach.

“At the conclusion of the season, Claudio will transition into a senior executive role, where he will be an adviser to the ownership on all sporting matters at the club. The search for a future coach will proceed over the next months. Claudio will have input in that decision as well,” Roma’s statement read.

“Forza Roma and welcome home, Mister!”
