Problems have emerged in Roma’s negotiations with free agent Mats Hummels, though they are still set to sign Mario Hermoso.

The transfer window has now closed in Italy, but the clubs are still able to pick up players who are out of contract to bolster their squads.

They need at least one new defender, as Chris Smalling is set to complete his medical and sign for Al-Fayha FC in the Saudi Pro League.

Hermoso already flew in on Sunday to have his tests and put pen to paper on a two-year contract with option for a third season.

Hummels no longer a priority for Roma

Roma had also been in talks with Hummels, but Sky Sport Italia report that problems have now emerged and the club is backing off.

The German international turns 36 in December and was released by Borussia Dortmund on July 1.

He has been in talks with numerous different clubs this summer, including Real Sociedad, but has so far been unable to agree terms with anyone.
