Roma will wear special shirts against Sassuolo showing support for the people of Afghanistan, which will then be auctioned to raise money for refugees.
The country has been overtaken by the Taliban, leading to thousands of refugees and many more desperately seeking a way out.
Roma announced there will be a patch on their jerseys during this weekend’s Serie A game against Sassuolo, featuring the logo of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
The match-worn shirts will then be auctioned for charity, with all proceeds donated to support the UNHCR initiatives and the people of Afghanistan.
They become the first football club to take part in this joint initiative with the UNHCR.
“We welcome the support that AS Roma and Roma Cares, with the assistance of our agency, want to give to the people of Afghanistan,” said Chiara Cardoletti, the UNHCR representative for Italy, the Holy See and San Marino.
“Despite the incredibly difficult circumstances, the UNHCR has chosen to stay in Afghanistan – a country where we have been working for more than 40 years – in order to provide assistance and save lives.
“This year alone we have supplied essential survival items to more than 240,000 people, but the need for such items grows hour by hour and the funds available are woefully insufficient.
“At times like this, even a small contribution can make a huge difference.”
Roma also confirmed they will facilitate the distribution of sporting materials from UEFA EURO 2020 among Afghan refugees currently housed in centres throughout Italy.
A group of players from the women’s Afghanistan football team have been given sanctuary in Florence, staying at the Coverciano training ground.
The shirts worn by the players this weekend will subsequently be put up for auction.
All proceeds will go towards supporting the people of Afghanistan. 🇦🇫
