Roma announced on Thursday they will present feasibility study to the local council over their plans to build a new stadium.

The Giallorossi have been keen for a new home ground for several years but have faced various complications in getting the construction started.

However, it appears positive steps are being taken as Roma plan to present their ideas to the local authorities.

A Roma statement read: “Following a series of joint meetings between the offices of the Capitoline administration and the technicians of AS Roma S.p.A. held in recent months, Roma Capitale positively acknowledges the willingness on the part of the Giallorossi club to present to the Campidoglio in the coming weeks a feasibility study for the construction of a stadium on a municipal area in the Pietralata district.

“The initial urbanistic examination carried out on the area identified by AS Roma did not highlight any obstacles to the presentation of the aforementioned project, which will be carefully evaluated by Roma Capitale according to the administrative process governed by the so-called stadium law (art. 1, paragraph 304, Law 147/2013).

“AS Roma expresses great satisfaction for the collaborative environment that characterised the meetings with the municipal offices.

“Roma Capitale and AS Roma share that the new stadium must represent a driver for the sustainable redevelopment of the Pietralata district without urban aggravation and, more generally, for the development of the Capital.”

The Stadio Olimpico was opened in 1953 and has been home to both Roma and Lazio ever since. It can hold a maximum attendance of just over 70,000.

Both Roma and Lazio have been Italian champions on two occasions since the stadium was built.

The Giallorossi’s Scudetto successes came in 1983 and 2001, with Lazio tasting national league glory in 1974 and 2000.

The venue has also been used to host the European Cup/Champions League final on four occasions with the most recent being Barcelona’s 2-0 win over Manchester United in 2009.

It also hosted the 1990 World Cup final as well as the 1968 and 1980 European Championship finals.
