Roma captain Lorenzo Pellegrini played without having fully recovered from a knee problem in the 3-2 defeat to Venezia and reportedly risks having to leave the Italy camp.

The Giallorossi are, according to Il Corriere dello Sport, hoping to avoid any further setbacks for the attacking midfielder, who could return to the Italian capital immediately.

Jose Mourinho’s men lost 3-2 against newly promoted Venezia on Sunday and Pellegrini acted like a true leader in the difficult moment at the Stadio Pierluigi Penzo.

The captain gritted his teeth and was the last to give up against the ArancioNeroVerde, despite struggling with a sore left knee.

Il Corriere dello Sport reports La Lupa took a calculated risk by playing him in Venice and in a moment of crisis, the 25-year-old was ready to help the team recover from their recent struggles.

Pellegrini checks in at Coverciano this morning, but the pain puts him in doubt for the national team this month.

The report claims he cannot rule out returning to Rome and the evaluations of the Giallorossi will also weigh on the final decision.

Roma would reportedly prefer to not take any risks and could ask the Azzurri to send him back to the Italian capital.

7 thought on “Roma and Italy are sweating over Pellegrini fitness”
  1. I was sure about this! This is unacceptable! They shouldn’t have left him play while he was injured! They let him play knowing that he will then be withdrawed from Italy’s crucial games! This is a major reason that Pelegrini hasn’t really showed up for Italy yet! He is always injured when Italy play! I am sure Bonuccci and Chiellini will do everything they can so they play at least a game! I wish Pellegrini makes it cause we need him!

  2. Roma are in such bad shape that they asked him to play injured against powerhouse Venezia, of all teams. But still lost. Only further aggravating his injury for Italy. This is bad.

  3. Midfield isn’t so much of a problem for Italy, we have so much cover there, so we shouldn’t threat that Verratti and Barella are out. In a way it’s a good thing as the usual suspects should be kept on their toes and not become complacent. I was looking forward to seeing Locatelli and Pellegrini in midfield together, but should Pellegrini not be risked, Zaniolo has the opportunity to shine in that role. We have Tonali available and I’m sure Castrovilli could be recalled too.

Defence is more cause for concern if Bonucci, Chiellini and Bastoni are out, as alternative pairings will be untested, but I have faith Mancini and Acerbi can do a good job.

In the event the rumoured injured do not make the cut, my team would be

    Donnarumma

    Calabria
    Mancini
    Acerbi
    Emerson

    Locatelli
    Jorginho
    Zaniolo/Tonali

    Insigne
    Immobile
    Chiesa

  4. I don’t have faith in Mancini at all. I see potential but right now he is struggling. In 2 years he could be good

I would prefer someone with more international experience in a big game like this.

Call me crazy but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bad game from Ranocchia with the Italian team Jersey. He has always been awesome.

  5. Why doesn’t Mancini bring Ogbonna back to the team? Way better defender than Acerbi. Is this classic Italian institutional racism?

  6. We will likely be seeing Jorginho for the full 2 matches if Pellegrini can’t make it. Though if he can give us the last 30 Minutes versus Northern Ireland, then that should be enough and worth having him stay.

Gianluca Mancini worries me as well. Maybe it’s becauae Roma leak in a lot of goals.

Even in the Derby last month Immobile beat him pretty bad in a foot race for one of the Lazio goals.

Acerbi is another shakey player. His co-fault for the goal conceded to Bulgaria and just a few days ago his ridiculous shirt pull conceded L’OM that PK. Brutal.

I think Bastoni makes it and he gets paired with Manicni.

Bastoni seemed to laugh off his stinker last month versus Spain (he was asked about before the Belgium match). Hopefully he got his bad match out of the way learned from it.

  7. Was going to mention Ogbonna. His team, West Ham, are more than holding their own in the EPL. He even netted a Winner 3 Weeks ago. He can help.

On top of that he has NT experience and knows the setup well.

No accusations of racism when they are unfounded. Many think Matteo Politano should be there and he’s as Italian as they come.
