Last month the Nerazzurri Coach accused his Napoli counterpart of using homophobic language toward him, declaring that people who use such language should be “drummed out of football”.

Sarri admitted he was wrong and the pair reconciled, but Rogers, who came out as gay in 2013, says the sport needs more people to take Mancini’s attitude.

“The confession changed everything,” the American full-back told Gazzetta dello Sport of his decision to be open about his sexuality.

“My experience tells me that football is a homophobic world. If things are changing slowly then it’s because of people who have the courage to speak up.

“I followed the dispute with Napoli in the Coppa Italia between Sarri and Inter’s Mancini, and we need more people like the Inter Coach.”
