Gonzalo Rodriguez admits Fiorentina are enjoying being top, but warns “there’s a long way to go”.

The Viola thrashed Inter 4-1 at San Siro on Sunday night to go top of Serie A for the first time since 1999, and the defender is enjoying the moment.

“I’ve always believed in this team,” Rodriguez explained to the Lega Serie A’s official website.

“Last year we did very well, this year quite a few have left. It was difficult to think about first place at the start of the season, but now we can enjoy it.

“Inter? It was important for us to understand who we are. We played very well, but there’s a long way to go.”

Paulo Sousa’s side face Atalanta at Artemio Franchi this weekend, and Rodriguez is not expecting an easy ride.

“Atalanta are a tough team, though I have good memories of facing them as I scored my first goal for the Viola against them.

“Sousa has come in at the right-time, he’s the most hard-nosed of any of my Coaches, he has more grit in his style of coaching.

“I came to Florence after a bad year [with Villarreal], I didn’t expect to become such an important player.

“I worked with humility, and it wasn’t hard to settle here.”
