Gonzalo Rodriguez and his Fiorentina teammates are looking to beat Inter “and take first place” in Serie A.

The Viola meet the Nerazzurri at San Siro on Sunday night, knowing that a win would allow them to move above the table-toppers on the head-to-head record.

“It’s a big game,” Rodriguez told journalists in a Press conference ahead of the match.

“They’re top of the table, but we want to win on Sunday and take first place. We want to continue with this positive run of form, playing as we know we can, giving 100 per cent and playing with humility.

“There are still a lot of points to be played for, there’s a long way to go and we’re only at the beginning of the season.

“We have to continue what we’ve been doing.”

The defender will come up against compatriot Mauro Icardi, as well as former teammate Stevan Jovetic.

“Icardi is a good striker, but Inter generally have good strikers. It will be difficult to mark him, we have to defend as a team, and not just by position.

“Is he like Batistuta? It’s difficult to compare anyone to Bati, I don’t think there’s a striker like him today.

“As for Jovetic, it’s nice to meet a former teammate like him. I always had a good relationship with him, and he’s the complete striker.

“He’s physically strong, and has a good understanding with Icardi. We’ll have to defend as a team.”

Rodriguez and his teammates are defying early season predictions, with many tipping them to struggle, was that a motivating factor?

“Yes, we felt a bit underestimated,” Rodriguez agrees.

“People said we were an ordinary team, and that hurt us, it bothered us. We knew we could do well though.

“We weren’t poor before, and we’re not phenomena now. We have to win every game, and now we’ll think about winning on Sunday.

“We’ll see where we are at the end of the season.”
