A statement from Santos noted that the player and club had ‘agreed by mutual consent’ to suspend the contract, which was only signed on October 10, so the player can focus exclusively on his legal defence.

“My objective was to help Santos. It irritates me that I am not able to do that, but it’s best that at this moment I concentrate on personal matters,” wrote the Brazilian on social media.

“I will prove my innocent for the Santos fans and those who like me.”
